When you're in a trying time and think God is telling you what to do, how do you know if it's really God?

I know you pray and ask for discernment. I guess on some level deep inside you know. I also think part of the problem is over thinking.

I feel inadequate about my life and i need to make sure that I'm really hearing from God...
